European year for active aging and solidarity between generations
The European Year for Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations is the European Year decided for 2012 .
The theme aims to help create a culture of active aging in Europe , improve employment opportunities and working conditions for the growing number of older people in Europe, and promote healthy aging. Older people should be encouraged to take an active role in society .
The European Council recalls that the European Union is based on the universal values of human rights and human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity and that the Lisbon Treaty of 2009 affirmed that the Union, among other things Fight social exclusion and discrimination and promote social justice and protection, equality between women and men and solidarity between generations. He noted that the Europe 2020 strategy called for inclusive growth, higher labor market participation and a reduction in poverty and social exclusion. The Council was determined to promote active aging and solidarity between the generations and called on all relevant actors to take this approach fully into account when implementing the Europe 2020 strategy. In the context of the European Year, the European Economic and Social Committee called for "a whole range of policy areas to be reconsidered: pension systems, work organization, lifelong learning, volunteering, health and care services and much more."
