The United Nations General Assembly had in 2012 to 18 December 2009 the International Year of Cooperatives declared (IJG). It was coordinated by the Economic and Social Affairs Department of the UN Secretariat . The IJG's motto was: “ Cooperatives create a better world”. The opening ceremony was held in New York on October 31, 2011.

background

The General Assembly of the United Nations wanted to use the IJG to draw attention to the contributions of cooperatives to the fight against poverty. Emphasis should also be placed on the performance of cooperatives in terms of social integration. The events planned in many countries were intended to make the strengths of the cooperative business model known to a broader public and provide impetus for social entrepreneurship.

Germany

The German program for the IJG was opened on October 18, 2011 at an event in Berlin. The German Cooperative and Raiffeisen Association and the Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies presented their campaign “A win for everyone - The cooperatives”.
