detail
Lobaria pulmonaria is a typical foliose lichen with green algae - symbiosis

Lobaria pulmonaria , also known as real lung lichen , is an endangered leaf lichen with pitted, olive-brown lobes that are olive to grass-green in color when moist. It is considered an indicator of intact ecosystems .

description

The lung lichen can reach a diameter of several decimeters. The camp is olive to brown or pale green in color, more or less green when moist. The protruding part between the pitted dents resembles a network of veins. The 1–3 cm wide lobes are deeply divided; the largest part often protrudes from the substrate. Fruiting bodies ( sorale ) are located on the "vein network" or on the edge (border), are yellowish-white in color and round. The underside is light brown to black with whitish beige, dome-like protrusions and delicate, felty hair.

Occurrence

The lung lichen occurs in moist, precipitation-rich locations from the boreal area to mountain areas in the Mediterranean area, especially in the oceanic area. There it grows on the bark of trees, mainly on maple and oak, less often on rock.

particularities

Since the lung lichen is very sensitive to air pollutants, the occurrence of the species, which was still widespread 100 years ago in the European lowlands, is now almost exclusively above 900 meters above sea level on the northern edge of the Alps. Therefore, lung lichen can be seen as an indicator of intact ecosystems . It is critically endangered - all of its occurrences deserve protection. In Rhineland-Palatinate , only two sites of lung lichen are known.

use

According to the doctrine of signatures , according to which all human organs have their counterparts in the appearance of different plants, which have been assigned a corresponding healing effect for the respective organ, but also because of the ingredients it contains, real lung lichen was used in the Middle Ages against lung diseases (blood spitting and consumption) . The homeopathy uses the lungwort still coughs. From Siberian monks it was used for brewing beer because of the contained bitters.
