Umbilicaria cylindrica, sometimes called Gewimperte Nabelflechte or fringe Nabelflechte denotes a sheet braid , which occurs in acidic rocks at higher altitudes.
description
The leaf-like lichen bed reaches 2 to 7 cm in diameter, is gray in color and connected to the base by a central “navel”. At the edge it has black, protruding bristles, which distinguishes Umbilicaria cylindrica from similar species. The mostly multi-lobed thallus is light brown to white-pink on the underside. The black fruiting bodies ( apothecia ) are initially sessile, later stalked with a grooved disc. Isidia are absent.
Occurrence
Umbilicaria cylindrica colonizes silicate rocks and rocks on light and wind-open, often sloping surfaces that are usually only briefly covered with snow. It is common in Europe, Asia, North and South America and Australia. Its European distribution center is in the north, but the species penetrates in the montane and alpine areas up to the high mountains of southern Europe. It is missing in the plains of Central Europe.
Others
Umbilicaria cylindrica was chosen by the Bryological-Lichenological Working Group for Central Europe as lichen of the year 2018.
