Carlo Fruttero (born September 19, 1926 in Turin , † January 15, 2012 in Castiglione della Pescaia ) was an Italian writer , editor , translator and publicist .

Life

Fruttero first made a name for himself as a translator of the works of Samuel Beckett . The late 1950s he met the publisher Einaudi on Franco Lucentini , they became friends. Among other things, they were responsible for delivering the blurb at the publishing house. The cooperation was then also literarily fruitful. At times they lived together in Paris before they returned to Italy. From 1964 to 1985, they worked together as co-editor of the science fiction magazine Urania , in which they themselves published short stories (under a pseudonym ). They were also the editor of the comic book Il Mago from 1972 to 1975 .

Together with Lucentini, who is six years older than him, he wrote - until his cancer-related suicide in 2002 - as a duo of authors Fruttero & Lucentini, profound social and detective novels that offer a multifaceted picture of Italian society from the 70s to 90s, as well as numerous satires , glosses, parodies and other texts.

His retirement home was last in Roccamare on the coast of Tuscany. Fruttero was married and had two daughters.

To the novel The Sunday Woman

The first novel “The Sunday Woman” (1974) is set in Turin and describes a. a. how the responsible detective, Commissario Santamaria, who comes from the deepest south of Italy, integrates perfectly into the Turin society. The novel is also characterized by a peculiarity that was still unusual in the year of publication. Only a few years earlier, in 1966, the American author George Baxt had published the first crime fiction novel with a gay detective , before Joseph Hansen founded this subgenre of crime fiction with his Dave Brandstetter stories. In the novel, one of the main characters (even one of the main suspects) is homosexual and has a boyfriend, the main difficulty for the two being their different social backgrounds.

In “The Truth About the Case D.” (1989), the author couple describe an international congress in Rome at which unfinished works of art are to be brought to completion. One of these works is Charles Dickens ' last - unfinished - novel , The Secret of Edwin Drood , published in monthly installments in 1870. But when the first three episodes appeared, Dickens died suddenly of a stroke. There were three more episodes in his estate, but nothing else. So the story, which had just been told halfway through, hung in the air, and everyone was puzzled as to how the author had wanted to end it. Numerous attempts to continue it appeared well into the 20th century - and these are now joined by the novel by Fruttero & Lucentini as perhaps the most original solution: Since the "Secret of Edwin Drood" is a real detective novel, the best come together Experts from all countries and times (sic!)
