from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jean Laplanche (born June 21, 1924 in Paris , † May 6, 2012 in Beaune , Burgundy ) was a French author and theoretician of psychoanalysis .

Laplanche is particularly known for his work in the field of psychosexual development and Freud's theory of seduction , which he generalized in 1987 (general seduction theory). Together with Jean-Bertrand Pontalis , he wrote the standard work Das Vokabular der Psychoanalysis in 1967 . The journal Radical Philosophy describes him as "the most original and philosophically informed psychoanalytic theorist of his day".

Life

Jean Laplanche was born on June 21, 1924 in Paris, in the 4th arrondissement. He grew up in the Côte-d'Or region . In his youth he was active in a group called Action catholique , a left-wing organization that campaigned for social justice. In the 1940s, Laplanche studied philosophy at the École normal supérieure in Paris , with Jean Hyppolite , Gaston Bachelard and Maurice Merleau-Ponty , among others . Under the Vichy regime , Laplanche joined the Resistance in 1943 . He was one of the founding members of the organization Socialisme ou barbarie , but soon turned away from this group, partly due to differences with Cornelius Castoriadis .

From 1946 to 1947 he studied for a year at Harvard , but not at the Institute for Philosophy there, but at the Institute for Social Relations. At this time his interest in psychoanalysis grew. After returning to France, Laplanche took part in Jacques Lacan's seminars and completed a training analysis there . After studying medicine, he practiced as an analyst himself and joined the International Psychoanalytical Association . In 1961 Daniel Lagache offered him a position at the Sorbonne in Paris.

Laplanche was elected President of the Association Psychanalytique de France in 1969, which he chaired until 1971, when he was replaced by his long-time friend Jean-Bertrand Pontalis .

In 1986 he was appointed to a doctorate honoris causa at the University of Lausanne , and later also at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Athens . In 1990 he was awarded the title of Knight of Arts and Letters , and in 1995 he received the Mary S. Sigourney Award . He later retired from teaching as Professor émérite at the Sorbonne ( University of Paris VII ).

Laplanche's collected lectures at the University of Paris VII are published in French in seven volumes under the title Problématiques .

From 1966, Jean Laplanche and his wife Nadine Laplanche, who married in 1950, shared their lives between Paris and Burgundy, at the Château de Pommard , where Jean-Louis Laplanche was a winegrower. Jean and Nadine Laplanche had to sell the family estate in November 2003. Nadine Laplanche died in April 2010.

In 1988, the collective translation began Complete Works of Sigmund Freud into French, the OCFP , under the scientific direction of Laplanche the publisher Presses Universitaires de France and where J. Laplanche also worked as an editor. The OCF.P will almost end in 2013 after Laplanche's death.

Jean Laplanche died on May 6, 2012 in Beaune.
