Ruth Fernández

Ruth Fernández ( Ruth Noemí Fernández Cortada ; born May 23, 1919 in Ponce , † January 9, 2012 in San Juan ) was a Puerto Rican singer .

Fernández was fourteen years old on the radio in her hometown and at the age of sixteen became the singer of the group Mingo y sus Whoopee Kids , with whom she toured Puerto Rico for eight years. In 1941 she made her first recording on Columbia Records . The success of the record earned her an engagement at the Teatro Latin in New York. After her return to Puerto Rico, she performed again with Mingo y sus Woopee Kids and also studied law and social science at the University of Puerto Rico .

In the following years she became a popular solo singer in Puerto Rico and internationally. She has broadcast on CBS , performed at Carnegie Hall and toured Latin America, Italy, Spain, France and Norway. She was friends with Jesús María Sanromá and with Pau Casals , who composed the song Ven a mí for her . At the celebration of their 50th anniversary on stage in 1985, Cantinflas , Libertad Lamarque , Pedro Vargas , Olga Guillot , Kasandra Damirón , Alberto Cortez and Nelson Ned performed, among others . Fernández represented Ponce in the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1973 and 1980.
