Dana Air flight 992 was a domestic flight of the Nigerian airline Dana Air from Abuja to Lagos . On June 3, 2012, the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 crashed on a densely populated area of ​​Lagos. In the accident, all 153 occupants, 147 passengers and six crew members, as well as an additional six people on the ground were killed.

Aircraft

The aircraft involved in the accident was a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 owned by the private Nigerian airline Dana Air. The aircraft was built in 1990 and since then had completed 60,000 flight hours with more than 35,000 flight cycles. A scheduled A-check had been carried out a few days beforehand .

Course of the accident

The aircraft was on a domestic flight from Abuja to Lagos, Nigeria. There were serious engine problems no later than 16 minutes after take-off. Despite this, the pilots neither returned to the Abuja departure airport, nor did they make an emergency landing at one of the Akure, Ilorin or Ibadan airports on the way. Neither the emergency checklist was processed nor air traffic control was first informed. Finally, both engines no longer responded to thrust lever inputs. At 3:43 p.m. local time, the pilots declared the emergency approximately 11 NM (20 km) north of the airport . A loss of thrust was reported with the following failure of both engines. The crash site is at 6 ° 40 ′  N , 3 ° 19 ′  E , Popoola Street in the Iju-Ishaga district of Lagos. The Xinhua News Agency reported that at least 40 more people were killed.

Victim

Among the victims were the head of the Nigerian non-profit organization National Taxidermists Association (NTA) , Levi Ajuonuma, the director of Mainstreet Bank Shehu Saad Usman, Aikhomu Ehime, son of the former general and vice-president Augustus Aikhomu , the actress Hope Okeke, Amina Bugaje , Chairman of L&M Companies and son of former Minister Usman Bugaje , and State Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Alhaji Ibrahim Damcida. In addition, the German Society for International Cooperation in Eschborn reported that two of its employees were sitting in the accident machine.
