Vox in excelso

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vox in excelso is the title of a papal bull presented by Pope Clement V to the Council of Vienne on March 22, 1312 , and passed on April 4, 1312.

object

With the Bull Pastoralis praeeminentiae , Pope Clement V laid the foundation stone for the dissolution of the Templar Order. The bull concerned the Knights Templar , which had been accused and prosecuted of several offenses by the French King Philip IV . Since the Knights Templar was subject to papal power and jurisdiction, the Pope and the Council of Vienne, convened for this purpose, investigated the allegations raised. Regardless of the allegations raised in detail, the Pope abolished the Knights Templar in this bull and forbade all activities in the direction of a new establishment, in particular joining or using the habit of the Knights Templar. At the same time, all previous papal bulls and instructions relating to the Templar order were canceled.

effect

This bull broke the resistance of the Knights Templar to his persecution in the Templar trials by the French crown. For the former Knights Templar it could only be a question of saving their own lives. The Pope corresponded to the massive influence of the French crown. This bull expressly did not express a judgment on the justification of the allegations made.

effectiveness

Some of the regulations of the Bull Vox in excelso were probably not promulgated at the council, but should initially be revised. With the early death of Clement V , the adoption was interrupted until Pope John XXII. continued the council.

Follow-up bulls

After the abolition of the Knights Templar, a number of other bulls were issued, which mainly regulated the distribution of the Knights Templar's assets:

The accused were tried in the Bull Considerantes dudum of May 6, 1312.

With the bulls Licet dudum (December 18, 1312), Dudum in generali concilio (December 31, 1312) and Licet pridem (January 13, 1313), the distribution of property dragged on.
