Faciens misericordiam is a papal bull from Pope Clement V , it dates from August 12, 1308 and was directed against the Knights Templar . With the bull, the Pope opens the Templar trial after hearing 72 confessing Templars .

Commission of inquiry against the order

With the Bull Regnas in caelis of 1308, Pope Clemens V had called an ecumenical council in Vienne for 1310 to give legal validity to the proceedings against the Templar order (note: the council did not take place until 1311). At the same time as this bull, he arranged for the establishment of a commission of inquiry, in which he listed articles of indictment and ordered the working methods of the diocesan commission in detail . This commission should first collect all information about the order and present the result to the planned council. This bull is also a summons to the Knights Templar before the council, which should ultimately decide on the survival of the Templars. With this bull, the Pope not only ordered action against the Templar Order in France , but also called a synod of bishops in Mainz . Here, too, he laid down the procedure for the diocese of Mainz and ordered the archbishops of Cologne , Trier and Magdeburg , as well as the bishops of Basel and Constance to Mainz. Furthermore, Clemens V ordered that the administration of the Templar estates be carried out by the participating archbishops during this synod. All persons who in the meantime had appropriated goods for safekeeping were requested to return them to the church immediately.
