Alfred Gulden (born January 25, 1944 in Saarlouis ) is a German writer , playwright , poet , songwriter and filmmaker .

Live and act

Alfred Gulden received his school education first in Saarlouis and from 1959 in the Bischöflichen Konvikt and in the Reginoschule in Prüm ( Eifel ), where he passed his Abitur in 1964. He then studied speech science , theater studies and modern German studies at the universities in Saarbrücken and Munich . After a few years of interruption, he resumed his studies in Munich in 1970 and passed his exam in 1972 as a certified speech educator.

In the mid to late sixties Gulden directed and played in various Munich cellar theaters including Eugène Ionesco , Edward Albee , John M. Synge and Peter Handke . In 1968 he founded an avant-garde theater group Processes / Ideas there . In 1969 he and friends set up action room 1 , a hall for action and conceptual art as well as for Arte Povera in Munich, which was given up a year later after more than 50 events. At the end of 1970, Gulden founded a living and working community in Munich with A1 Informations , which ran a printing company and a publishing house. He worked there for the next ten years. At the same time he repeatedly worked on artistic projects; For example, in 1975 he realized the 24-hour action by the Austrian artist Hermann Nitsch , probably the most important representative of Viennese actionism (and also its 6-day game in Prinzendorf in 1998 ).

Gulden is a member of the PEN Center Germany . His first marriage was to the American Karen Bunjer. In Munich he met his future wife Karin Hubach.

In addition to his literary and cinematic work, Gulden is also active as a songwriter ; he writes his lyrics mostly in his native dialect. Gulden is a member of the New Music Network .

He lives in Wallerfangen in the Saarland (Niederlimberg district) and in Munich ( Nymphenburg district ).

Alfred Gulden's work is shaped by the tension between local ties on the one hand, which is also expressed in the literary use of his Moselle-Franconian dialect , and on the other hand his cosmopolitanism, which led him to longer stays in numerous places around the world. He traveled to the USA a few times (for the first time in 1967), and his literary breakthrough came with his novel Greyhound ( Greyhound Lines ). In this novel, Gulden deals with the “ American Dream ”, the content and form of which he rubs intensely - with the strange gaze and experiences of a Central European.

Gulden is of the opinion that dialect has highly differentiated linguistic possibilities of expression, which is why their use is reflected in his literary output.

His film and radio works occupy a prominent place in Gulden's work. He produced programs in a wide variety of genres for a number of ARD stations, especially for Saarland broadcasting . The focus of his work is on descriptions of living conditions, landscapes and human fates in his familiar environment, the greater region of Lorraine - Luxembourg - Saarland - Wallonia - Rhineland-Palatinate .
