The title of the program goes back to the radio broadcasts of the same name by Bayerischer Rundfunk ( night studio , founded in 1949) and Südwestfunk Baden-Baden (1952). Culture journalist Volker Panzer invited people from art and culture, society and science to a discussion. Interdisciplinary topics such as “Do we have free will?”, “What if?” Were discussed. - Questions about German history ”or“ The Chinese challenge - my new life in China ”. An integral part of the talk show was “The Last Word” by a deceased celebrity, which ended each program with a quote that went with the topic.

Several scientific papers were written about the night studio, including a post-doctoral thesis on the program “Rules for the Human Park - the Debate” with the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk on September 26, 1999, who with Rüdiger Safranski ran the Philosophical Quartet program in a similar format.

The night studio was closed on June 24, 2012 and said goodbye after more than 15 years.
