Michael Weisser (born October 18, 1948 in Deichsende, now Wurster Nordseeküste ) is a German media artist, music producer and science fiction author.

Life

After an internship in a chemical research laboratory in Bonn, Weisser studied sacred painting, experimental painting and free graphics at the Werkkunstschule in Cologne from 1967 to 1972 . In seminars with Niklas Luhmann , Alphons Silbermann , Alfred Schmidt and Bazon Brock , he focused on aesthetic theory as well as art, cybernetics and systems theory . He graduated with an exam as a degree. Of. from.
He then studied art history , communication science , political science , sociology and education at the University of Bonn and the University of Marburg .

After completing his studies, Weisser did freelance research on the topics of aesthetics in the everyday world, industrial architecture, workers' housing, the displacement of ornament and German advertising. From 1984 he worked with Peter Mergener , with whom he formed the software duo. To develop music concepts and to set up a sound and image archive for the world music project GENE, Weisser carried out a large number of study trips and digitally recorded more than 1000 Sounds-of-Planet-Earth as original sounds.

In 1985 Weisser took on the role of Creative Director at the music label Innovative Communication (IC), developing product designs and strategic alliances with branded companies in collaboration with his partner Mark Sakautzky in order to open up new sales channels for the label's music. In 1990 the million sales mark was exceeded and Sakautzky / Weisser founded IC / DigItMusic GmbH . In 1994 Sakautzky sold his shares to the Pallas Group, and Weisser headed IC for eight years until he also sold his shares to Pallas in 2002 and turned back to art with a focus on new, digital media.

In the summer of 2008 the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) took over his entire artistic work.

In 2014 Weisser developed the first hybrid medium with its QR coding (from 2007) that Die | QR | Edition implements as an imprint of the publisher p.machinery in Murnau am Staffelsee . This idea of ​​the media mix of image, sound and word continues the idea of ​​the cassette book Dea-Alba - A fantastic sounding story with Musik-MC from Software from 1988.

Since 1966 he has carried out a number of multimedia concepts, presentations and projects. In 1989 he was the founder and organizer of the Bremer Tage der Computerkultur festival .

Today Weisser works as a media artist with a focus on noise , CompressedWorld and i: Codes in Bremen and Artà.

Cultural Policy - Citizens' Initiatives

In 1970 Weisser was a founding member of the citizens' initiative planning groups for cultural policy and the urban development work group in Bonn, as well as a founding member of the Society for Art Consumption and Production . From 1972 to 1974 he was chairman as well as state and federal delegate of the Federal Association of Visual Artists (BBK) in Cologne and Bonn, and from 1973 to 1975 editor-in-chief of the art and cultural policy magazine (BBK). In spring 2008 he developed the concept for a new use of the anti-colonial memorial in Bremen and was a founding member of the non-profit organization DerElefant! .
