Thomas Franke (born May 15, 1954 in Koethen ) is a German graphic artist and actor .

Life

Shortly after taking up a degree in physics, Franke moved to the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art in 1975 to study painting and graphic techniques. From 1980 he studied performing arts at the Ernst-Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts and GITIS, the Russian Academy for Theater Arts .

Thomas Franke has lived and worked in Bonn since 1984.

Career

As a graphic artist

Between 1979 and 1983 Franke designed titles for the Fantastic Library of Suhrkamp Verlag with book title vignettes. For this work he was awarded the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize for fantastic graphics in 1981 and 1982 . For the design of the book "Der Zeiter" by Wolfgang Jeschke , which was published by Shayol-Verlag in Berlin, he received the award again in 2006. A fourth time he was awarded the prize for the cover design of the 29th edition of the magazine Exodus im Awarded in 2013.

Since the end of 2015 Franke has been designing the thirty-volume science fiction work edition by the writer Herbert W. Franke on behalf of the p.machinery publishing house .

As an actor

After brief engagements at the Münchner Kammerspiele and the Theater Bonn , Franke has been working as a freelance actor since 1995.

The production “Störwerk - Monologue for a Shakespeare King with a Side Effect” was invited to the New York International Fringe Festival in 2000 . Franke was the first German actor to receive the "Fringe Overall Award for the Best Male Performance" for portraying the penniless actor.

In addition to his stage roles, he has appeared in numerous film and television productions, speaks for various radio stations in Germany in radio plays and features and reads audio books for his own audio-piece publisher Ululation-Records.

The production "The Model"

In the mid-1990s, Thomas Franke achieved national media fame with the monologue “Das Modell” for only one viewer at a time. The play based on HP Lovecraft's story " Pickman's Model " has been performed more than 800 times since 1995 in Cologne, Bonn and many other cities in Germany. In 2001 “The Model” was filmed for the Franco-German cultural broadcaster arte with Thomas Franke.
