action

St. Martinus Church in Zons, the location of the series

The brothers Maik and Kevin Schäfer earn their living as thieves and con artists in Berlin . After a failed deal with the gangster Jurek, who brings them 50,000 euros in debt , Maik decides to go into hiding. In order to get money, he, disguised as a conductor , steals from the passengers of a train at simulated ticket controls . When he threatens to be blown out, he exchanges his uniform for the cassock of a priest who has died unnoticed in his compartment . He lands at the train station in the fictional town of Läuterberg. The parish housekeeper Maria considers him to be the new pastor she expects and accompanies him to the parish house of the Catholic community.

Maik learns that the community has an extremely valuable monstrance . He would like to steal this in order to use the proceeds to pay off the debt with Jurek, who is putting increasing pressure on his brother in Berlin. To carry out the theft , he makes various plans, which fail again and again due to unfortunate chains of circumstances. When it turns out that the supposed work of art is a fake , Maik's brother Kevin also comes to Läuterberg. Together, the two try to find a new way to pay their debts to Jurek.

In order to maintain his camouflage in the course of events , Maik participates in the fate of the congregation as pastor and resolves problems in an unconventional way. The situation is complicated by the fact that between Maik and the pretty church choir director Eva Hellwarth, who is also a police officer , developed a love relationship .

Events come thick and fast when finally Jurek himself comes to Läuterberg. When he is choking on a peanut in the rectory , Boris, another gang member, appears. Boris forces Maik and Kevin to raid the local bank branch with him . The brothers remain unrecognized, but the police officer Eva Hellwarth succeeds in identifying Boris based on the testimony of a bank employee. On the run, he fires a shot at the policewoman, but Maik intercepts it. Whether Maik will survive remains open at the end of the first season.

reception

Reviews

The series is mostly perceived by the critics as an innovative but amusing dramedy series that does not make it beyond average.

On the basis of the first two episodes, Jana Bärenwaldt from the industry portal wunschliste.de judged : “'Sankt Maik' is typically light series food for evenings when you just want to relax on the couch and switch off. Despite a few shortcomings, the series has a sense of humor and a certain charm and is entertaining to watch when you have nothing better in mind. "

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung sees the series rather positively and thinks that it is " a blessing for the program of the private broadcaster as an antipode to the ' jungle camp ' ".

Thomas Jansen, the head of the service of kathisch.de , the Internet portal of the Roman Catholic Church in Germany , notes that the scenes and dialogues are often funny and recommends the series as "entertaining viewing pleasure", even if the figure of the false priest "Hardly more unrealistic than that of the police chief inspector in an average crime scene ".

Loryn Pörschke from serienjunkies.de pointed out the similarity of the series to the US comedy series Impastor .
