Špansko

Špansko is a district in the western part of the Croatian capital Zagreb . In 2011 Špansko had 24,241 inhabitants.

Špansko is divided into Špansko-jug (Špansko south) and Špansko-sjever (Špansko north).

There are two Roman Catholic parish churches and three primary schools in Špansko : the Ante Kovačić , Tituš Brezovački and Špansko Oranice primary schools .

It is the largest district in Zagreb and the Ante Kovačić School is the primary school with the largest number of students in Zagreb.

The name "Špansko" comes from the Croatian word "špan" (the tax collector; Špansko is "tax area"). It was first mentioned in 1598, earlier like toponym Lonka (1242).

Sports

Well-known athletes from Špansko are the handball players Klaudija Bubalo and Vedran Zrnić (they attended the Ante Kovačić elementary school).
