Jerry Yulsman

Jerry Yulsman (born February 8, 1924 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † August 6, 1999 in Brooklyn , New York City ) was an American photographer and writer.

After being expelled from high school , Yulsman enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1941 , providing false information about his age in order to be accepted. He trained as a war photographer at Lowry Air Force Base near Denver and initially deployed to North Africa during the war. Later he flew, among other things, missions against oil fields; for example, he took part in Operation Tidal Wave in August 1943 , a very wasteful and unsuccessful attempt by the Air Force to stop oil production for the German Wehrmacht in Ploieşti . He later processed these experiences in the novel The Last Liberator .

After the Second World War , Yulsman worked as a photo reporter. He shot for Playboy , Collier’s and Look magazine . His best-known works are the photographs taken in 1957 by the American writer Jack Kerouac , one of the most important representatives of the Beat Generation , which were later used in an advertising campaign for the clothing manufacturer GAP . During the 1970s, Yulsman wrote several textbooks on photography and taught at the School of Visual Arts .

Yulsman began writing fictional texts around 1980 but only finished two novels. His first novel Elleander Morning (dt. Elleander Morning ) appeared in 1984 and describes an alternative world in which the Second World War did not take place. The novel won the Australian Ditmar Award in 1986 and the German Kurd Laßwitz Prize in 1987 as the best foreign science fiction novel of the year. His second novel The Last Liberator was published in 1991 and is based on his war experiences. Under a pseudonym he wrote the first three volumes of the erotic novel series The Intimate Memoir of Dame Jenny Everleigh , which was later continued by other authors.

Before Yulsman could finish his third novel Gotham , which is about New York , he died of lung cancer in 1999 .
