Pinky and the Million Pug (alternative spelling: Pinky and the 1,000,000 Pug) is a family film by Stefan Lukschy from 2001. It is based very loosely on the children's crime thriller “ Detective Pinky ” by Gert Prokop from 1982.

action

The orphan boy Pinky lives with his foster parents Pommer, called punk and blindworm, with his best friend Monster and the twins Wumm and Peng, who can only say the two words "Wumm" and "Peng" since the loss of their parents. Pinky has a big dream of becoming a detective, like Allan Pinkerton , hence his nickname. He also likes to experiment with model airplanes and model helicopters, in which he builds a chip. During one of these experiments, the plane lands in the garden of millionaire restaurant and chain store owner Jonathan Morgan, who was bombed the same day with a threat stating that "your time is up". The chip flies out of the plane and is swallowed by Morgan's pug, Arnold.

In addition, the Pommer family is growing: little Diana wants to separate from her parents and finds a new home in the family of punk and blindworm. She quickly befriends Pinky and Monster.

When Pinky and Monster are in a Morgan burger shop, a poor-looking old man arrives and begs for food. Pinky buys him a burger for 2.20 DM, but he throws it away and keeps the money and disappears with a car. Pinky doesn't know that it is actually Morgan himself who tries to spy on his employees undercover in this way. When Pinky was stopped by Inspector Columbus in the chase, he was still able to remember the license plate and learned Morgan's address.

When they arrive at Morgan, Pinky and Morgan get to know each other. Morgan is impressed with how Pinky was able to find him and shortly afterwards asks him to handle a case: Lately, his department store has been broken into without leaving a trace. The boss of the store, Morgan's nephew Philip, who like his brother, the crazy inventor Frank, wants to get Morgan's legacy, keeps forgetting to put tapes into the surveillance camera and Morgan doesn't want to hire a night watchman. That's why Pinky should find out. After Pinky passes a test that qualifies him for the Morgan case, he begins checking out the store. When he stays in the shop at night, he also notices the thief who escapes him. But Pinky manages to call the police and they unmask the thief as shop detective Moser, who is then arrested. As a reward Pinky receives 50 DM and a garden party at Morgan's. Morgan is nearly run over on the way from the crime scene. Pinky concludes from previous events that someone is keen to kill Morgan.

While Pinky continues to look for what is wrong with the threat and attack, and a. with a new surveillance helicopter, Morgan speaks to his financial advisor, the greasy Dr. Webster, about his legacy. After Morgan is fed up with being reminded of this by his nephews, he bequeaths everything, to everyone's surprise, his pug Arnold.

When Morgan Pinky wants to buy a new TV as a prepayment, he realizes that Arnold has disappeared. Pinky and his friends immediately set to work to find the kidnapped pug. The chip that Arnold swallowed earlier helps them with this. The path leads them to a deserted area where Arnold was found tied up. To make sure that the kidnapper is caught, they want to take Morgan to the crime scene, with the monster and princess taking care of Arnold. On the way to the crime scene in the car, Pinky and Morgan look at the surveillance footage from the camera on Pinky's aircraft. This shows that Dr. Webster is involved in the bomb. But Pinky wants to collect evidence. Suddenly the car skidded and Morgan was injured. Pinky, Morgan and Leontine drive to the crime scene in the ambulance and Pinky is about to look for his friends. There he is held by a criminal and tied to a train carriage with Monster and Diana. The criminal actually pretends to be Dr. Webster realizes and reveals his plan that he wanted to get Morgan's inheritance himself, but because Arnold became a universal heir, he wanted to kidnap Arnold and kill Morgan and Leontine in a car accident to get the inheritance. Now he wants to kill the children too, but is caught by Morgan and Leontine. Webster is then arrested by the police, Arnold is rescued and Morgan offers Pinky to adopt him. Pinky accepts and, as previously agreed, he moves in with everything he has (his friends) to live with Morgan and Leontine. And all of a sudden, thump and bang began to speak properly. Frank and Phillip also stay in the house, but as servants.

Differences to the book template

  • The original plot of the novellas takes place in the fictional city of Kittsburgh in New York State. The film takes place in an undisclosed location in Germany. However, an ambulance driving the injured Morgan has the sign "Krankentransport Ost / West", which is only available in Leipzig.
  • The original book does not have a continuous storyline, but consists of various novellas that contain different customers. Here Pinky only solves two cases that directly affect Jonathan Morgan. There are also small critical allusions to society in the novel that hardly appear here, such as criticism of US senators.
  • Since the original book is set in the USA in the 1980s, there are always allusions to the life of the USA, for example the hymn is mentioned, certain everyday slang, Sesame Street etc. The film is set in today's Germany (2000-2001) and includes in Dialogue as good as no allusions to life in Germany or to German everyday culture.
  • Jonathan Morgan appears in a few novels, and each new novella introduces new characters who are clients of Pinky. In the film, Morgan is the main character as the only client.
  • Of the original characters, there are Pinky, Jonathan Morgan, Monster and the princess as well as their foster parents Punk (in the original Potter, due to the parents' last name) and Blindworm. The parents are called Pommer in the film.
  • In the film, Pinky's full name, which is Absolon W. Beaver in the book, is never mentioned.
  • In the original novel, Pinky demands animal donations for the local zoo or circus tickets for himself and monsters for his services. In the film he gets money, parties and also demands a television.
  • At the end of the book, Pinky helps his friend Monster get adopted. In the film, Pinky himself is adopted by Morgan, who then brings his friends into the house and they are automatically adopted.

Interesting

  • The story of the shop detective is based on the novella Night All Cats are gray from the original book.
  • The character of the inspector Columbus is based on the character Captain Henderson from the original book.
  • The film was shot in Leipzig. The backdrop for the manager's office of the Morgan department store was an office in the Speckhof-Passage. You can also see many streets in downtown Leipzig and the famous “Auerbachs Keller”.
  • The Leipzig actor and cabaret artist Thorsten Wolf can be seen in a brief appearance as a seller in the animal shop , who has also worked as animal keeper Conrad Weidner in veterinarian Dr. Mertens plays along.

criticism

Neues Deutschland wrote in August 2001: “Director Stefan Lukschy stages the search for the bad guys as nice table fireworks, lively, sometimes quite exciting - but also a little irrelevant. The fact that no more was extracted from the material was probably less due to him than to some fundamental decisions made by production. One of them, perhaps the most important for the film, may have been to let as little social reality as possible flow into the action. "

The film lexicon Zweiausendeins writes: “An eleven-year-old orphan boy who emulates the great detective Pinkerton helps a department store owner out of a fix several times and finds his kidnapped pug with his friends, which the millionaire used as the sole heir. Childlike entertainment that largely ignores reality and primarily serves children's fantasies. Even if the hustle and bustle of American productions is avoided, the film cannot convince all around, since the ingratiation to the target audience is sometimes too striking. "
