Aurel Stroe

Aurel Stroe (born May 5, 1932 in Bucharest ; † October 3, 2008 in Mannheim ) was a Romanian composer and music teacher.

Life

Aurel Stroe studied composition and musicology at the Bucharest University of Music . Between 1966 and 1969 he took part in the Darmstadt summer courses . In 1968 he studied computer composition and electro-acoustic music in the USA. He taught instrumentology and orchestration at the Bucharest University of Music until 1975 and then headed a composition class until 1985.

From 1972 to 1973 he stayed in Berlin at the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service . After being invited to the University of Illinois in 1985, he did not return to Romania, but settled in Mannheim. In 1988 he and his wife Angelika Kohli founded a cycle of symposia for new music at the Free University for Anthroposophical Education .

In 1992 Stroe founded annual summer courses for composers in the Carpathian Mountains, and since 1993 he has been Professor of Composition at the Bucharest University of Music. His students include Liana Alexandra , Maia Ciobanu , Horia Rațiu , Șerban Nichifor , Gabriel Vladescu , Carmen Stoianov , Petru Stoianov , Adrian Borza , George Draga , Smaranda Oțeanu-Bunea , Fred Popovici and Violeta Dinescu .

Stroe was awarded the Herder Prize and the Grand Prize of the Bucharest Composers' Union , among others .
