In January 1956, he reached the podium for the first time in Le Brassus, Switzerland, as third behind Georg Thoma and Andreas Däscher . Berg celebrated his first national success at the Norwegian Championship in Porsgrunn in 1959 , where he won the silver medal on the normal hill behind Anders Woldseth . At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , Berg jumped from the normal hill to 13th place with jumps on 83.0 and 81.5 meters. A few weeks later he was twelfth at the Holmenkollen Ski Festival in Oslo , which was his best placings in this ski jumping competition.
