Hesperaloe malacophylla (English trivial name "Soft-Leaved Hesperaloe") is a species of the genus Hesperaloe in the agave family (malacophylla Latin = soft-leaved).

description

Hesperaloe malacophylla is stemless and forms small lumps up to 40 cm wide. The variable, curved, soft leaves are up to 150 cm long. There are flexible, fine fibers at the edges of the leaves.

The branched inflorescence becomes 1 to 3 m long. The white flowers are 25 to 30 mm long and 20 mm wide. The woody capsules, spherical when ripe, are 25 mm long and wide. The textured black seeds are up to 8 mm long, 4 to 7 mm wide and 1 mm thick. The seeds mature from June to July, depending on the flowering time. The flowering period is from April to May.

Characteristic are the thin, long, soft leaves with the fine edge fibers, in contrast to the other species of the genus, which form stiff, strong leaves.

Distribution and systematics

Hesperaloe malacophylla is located in Mexico in the state of Tamaulipas at an altitude of 800 to 1000 m and grows in a limited area near Ciudad Victoria. It is only known from the type location. The species grows in woodland together with Dasylirion berlandieri .

The first description by Fritz Hochstätter and José Guadalupe Martínez-Ávalos was published in 2010.
