Bishop began his career in London in 1961 as a supporting actor in television series and plays. A year later he made his first appearance in a movie - he played an ambulance driver in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita . After further short appearances (among others in Even the little ones want to go up , James Bond 007 - You Only Live Twice , 2001: A Space Odyssey ), he met the television producers Gerry and Sylvia Anderson in 1967 , who gave him a leading role in the puppet series Captain Scarlet and then cast him as Commander Ed Straker in the science fiction series UFO . Both series, although they only ran for a short time, became very popular and earned him a large fan base. He therefore regularly took part in fan conventions until his death .

In the following years he continued to take on roles in radio, television, film and theater and lent his voice for commercials and cartoons. Since he had his main residence in England, he was mainly cast as an American in British productions.

He was married three times and had a son (deceased) and three daughters. He died just days after his UFO co-star Michael Billington .
