Longitudinal Recording ( English longitudinally along continuously ' ) or longitudinal recording also Longitudinal Magnetic Recording (LMR) , a recording technique in magnetic disks is such. B. hard disks , in which the sections of the room that are magnetized for one bit are not placed perpendicular to the direction of rotation of the data carrier, but parallel to it. The counterpart to longitudinal recording is perpendicular recording .

The principle of longitudinal recording corresponds to the well-known recording on tape with the aid of a tape head and was used on all computer hard drives until around 2005. It was then increasingly supplanted by perpendicular recording and then completely replaced in this segment from around 2010.
