The Hispanic flag is composed of three purple crosses of equal size in front of an Inti sun on a white background.
The flag was designed by Ángel Camblor, a captain of the Uruguayan armed forces , on the occasion of a competition launched by Juana de Ibarbourou to create a flag as a symbol of Hispanicity. She was hoisted for the first time on October 12, 1932, the day of the Día de la Hispanidad , in Montevideo . It was officially adopted as the flag of Hispanicity at the 7th Pan-American Conference in 1933.
symbolism
The colors of the flag have the following symbolic value:
- White symbolizes peace.
- The Inti Sun stands for the awakening of the American continent.
- The three crosses remind of the three ships of Christopher Columbus : Niña , Pinta and Santa Maria .
- Purple is the color of the lion in the Castilian coat of arms and refers to the region in which the common language originated: Castellano (Castilian Spanish).
