Vladimír Páral (pseudonym Jan Laban ) (born August 10, 1932 in Prague ) is a Czech writer .

The spectrum of his work ranges from satire to prose under the influence of the communist regime. Paral was probably also an employee of the State Security ( Státní bezpečnost ).

Life

Born in Prague, he spent his youth in Brno and attended secondary school here. He then studied chemical engineering in Pardubice and worked as an engineer in Liberec and Ústí nad Labem until 1967 . In 1972 he switched to the North Bohemian Publishing House in Aussig as a publishing editor . In 1977 he signed the Anticharta . He has been a freelance writer since 1979. From 1995 he lived alternately in Mariánské Lázně and Prague.

Works

In Paral's literary work, he lets individuals experience different situations and tests their reactions. Best described in the novella Fair of Wishes Fulfilled (Veletrh splněných přání). It belongs to the first part of his black pentalogy , a cycle of three short stories and two novels that criticize the mechanization of life and the commercialization of society.

After the novel Lovers and Murderers (Milenci a vrazi - 1969), the regime indicated to him that his criticism of communist normalization after the Prague Spring should disappear from his novels. He then changed his style and wrote his idealizing, adapted and schematic novel Professionelle Frau (Profesionální žena) in 1971 , a parody of flattened literature with colorless heroes who affirm the system. Similarly, his 1973 novel, which belongs to his period of "white pentalogy", The Young Man and the White Whale (Mladý muž a bílá velryba), which was highly praised by the official propaganda.

After his book Torment of Imagination (Muka obraznosti), he abandons reality and writes four sci-fi novels Romeo and Julie 2300 , Temptation A-ZZ (Pokušení A-ZZ), The War with the Multi-Animal (Válka p mnohozvířetem) and World of Women (Země žen). These works, as well as his subsequent books Buch der Wonne, des Lachens und Freude (Kniha rozkoší, smíchu a radosti - 1993) and Playgirls I and II are aimed at the general public, some with sexual themes that were forbidden under the communist regime. Some of his works have been filmed and edited for the theater.
