Dottie West
Dottie West (born October 11, 1932 in McMinnville , Tennessee as Dorothy Marie Marsh , † September 4, 1991 in Nashville ) was an American country singer .
Beginnings
Dottie had a tough childhood. She was the oldest of ten children in a desperately poor family ruled by a drunkard and violent father. There were only peaceful and pleasant moments when you listened to the Grand Ole Opry together in front of the radio or made music yourself.
Despite all the difficulties, Dottie graduated from high school and received a scholarship to study music at Tennessee Tech. During her studies she worked as a singer. She fell in love with the guitarist Bill West . The two married in 1953, and a little later the couple had two sons. After graduating, the family moved to Cleveland . Here Dottie appeared regularly on local television. In 1958 the daughter Shelly was born. The family moved to Nashville three years later .
Career
In 1963 Dottie West managed to write the song Is This Me? writing for Jim Reeves . Jim Reeves then got her a record deal with RCA . Responsible producer was Chet Atkins . Her first single, Love Is No Excuse - a duet with Jim, reached the top 10. Her next hit was in 1964 with her own composition Here Comes My Baby . She became the first female country star to receive a Grammy for this song . She now appeared regularly in the Grand Ole Opry and continued to have hits. In 1973 she achieved a national success that went beyond the country scene with the Coca-Cola promotional song Country Sunshine .
In the early 1970s, Dottie's appearance changed. Until then she had appeared in a rather undressing or even modest outfit, but suddenly she appeared on stage in a skin-tight, shiny dress. The slightly hoarse touch of her voice did the rest to make her a sex symbol. In those years she was considered Nashville's most beautiful. In 1972 she married Bryan Metcalf, who was twelve years her junior . She played a couple of duets with Don Gibson and Kenny Rogers , creating several number 1 hits. Dottie West was at the height of her career and life. Their music moved further and further away from the country sound. The songs became more poppy and contained rock elements in various ways.
A dramatic decline began in the mid-1980s. The record successes failed to materialize. She started drinking. In 1983 she married Al Winters, 23 years her junior. The marriage lasted only two years. In 1990 she filed for private bankruptcy. At times Dottie lived in her touring bus. But she struggled, kept performing and preparing for a comeback. On September 4, 1991, Dottie West died at the age of 58 from complications in a car accident.
