A year later he was appointed to the chair for medical statistics and documentation (later medical informatics) at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . He headed the Institute for Medical Informatics there from 1970 to 2003.

Scientific work

Joachim Dudeck is considered one of the pioneers of medical documentation in Germany. He carried out various research and development work in the areas of automatic ECG analysis, automatic word processing, hospital information systems (HIS) with knowledge-based functions , tumor documentation systems (Giessen tumor documentation system, GTDS), application of communication standards in medicine ( HL7 , XML ) and was also after his retirement in the field of medical terminology, such as B. the spread of LOINC or SNOMED CT active.

The clinical cancer registry (Giessen tumor documentation system GTDS)

As early as 1980, Dudeck successfully carried out a pilot study for an epidemiological cancer registry in Hesse , in which a reporting rate of 80 percent was achieved within the first year. After reunification , he succeeded in decisively advancing the care of cancer patients in the new federal states by setting up tumor centers with their clinical cancer registries and by providing a uniform technological platform. He established the working group for the coordination of clinical cancer registries in Giessen , which already in 1991 provided standardized software for clinical cancer registries (Giessen tumor documentation system GTDS) . Around 70 percent of all German tumor centers now use this system. From 1990 he was committed to the establishment of standardized tumor registries in the Czech Republic , Poland , Hungary , Latvia , Lithuania , Estonia , the countries of the former Yugoslavia and Turkey .
