The Jalisco earthquake occurred on June 3, 1932 at 4:36 local time with a magnitude of 8.1 in the Mexican state of Jalisco . It was preceded by some weaker tremors. It is said to have claimed around 400 deaths, more than 30 of them in Guatemala . More than 200 houses were damaged in Colima and some roofs collapsed. Other badly affected cities were Ayutlan , Manzanillo , Guadalajara , La Barca , Mascota and Uruapan . Even in Mexico City , slight damage to buildings was recorded. The earthquake triggered a tsunami . There were two major aftershocks on June 18 and June 22. The latter caused a larger tsunami than the main quake, although of a smaller magnitude, and claimed an additional 75 lives.
