Guðbergur Bergsson
Guðbergur Bergsson (born October 16, 1932 in Grindavík ) is an Icelandic writer .
Life
Guðbergur Bergsson graduated from the Icelandic School of Education in 1955. He then went to Spain for further studies . First he studied Spanish , literature and art history at the University of Barcelona , which he completed with an examination.
The author also frequented literary circles in Spain, where his long-term partner comes from.

His first books, the novel Die Maus auf der Lauer (Músin sem læðist) and the poetry anthology Endurtekin orð , appeared in 1961 . Since then he has published numerous works of various kinds, including 20 novels.
The German novel Der Schwan (Svanurinn) (1991) appeared in German. The protagonist is a prepubescent young girl who is sent from the city to the countryside to recover from the city as a punishment for an absurd theft - she eats a plastic-wrapped sandwich from the refrigerated shelf in the supermarket. There she experiences her puberty.
One of his last novels, published in German, is Liebe im Versteck der Seele (2000). The actors here are two men from Reykjavík who are married to women . One of the two has rented a basement apartment where they meet regularly for sex. Obviously, this novel is less about the consequences of an "unspirated, heterosexual marriage" or about a "representation of discrimination against homosexual lifestyles", as is sometimes assumed. Rather, Guðbergur Bergsson plays with a stereotype in and about Icelandic society in which everyone believes "everyone knows everyone". One of the men confides in a mentally handicapped boy to whom he tells in detail all the details of his sexual relationship: If he tells the story, no one will believe it, so the conclusion.
The book Flatey Frey, written in 1971, was published in a German-Icelandic edition in 2007. Here the author addresses essential questions about the development of art in verse. How are pictures and words created, how do shape and form grow? The text moves in the intermediate areas of literature, art and music. Basically, he touches on the genres of literature, but creates his own form that thematizes and implements precisely the questions of how it takes shape.
Guðbergur Bergsson's close relationship with Spain is reflected in numerous translations from Spanish and Latin American literature, including such well-known works and authors as Cervantes ' Don Quixote , Gabriel García Marquez and Federico García Lorca .
