life and career

Michael Kuhn is the younger of two children, his parents were the German-born Theodore Kuhn Sr. and Pearl Hicks. The family moved to Hollywood during the Depression , where his father found a job as a butcher. Mickey was fortunate enough to contribute to the family income at the age of two when he was selected for his first film role by Fox Studios for the film Change of Heart in 1934 . Kuhn became a sought-after child actor in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s, although he never really became famous and mostly only played supporting roles.

He had a first more significant role in 1939 as Beau Wilkes, son of Ashley ( Leslie Howard ) and Melanie Wilkes ( Olivia de Havilland ), in the classic film Gone with the Wind . He also played Junior , son of the detective Dick Tracy, in a 1945 film adaptation of the Dick Tracy comic series . He has also appeared in a variety of westerns, including the adopted son of John Wayne in Howard Hawks ' western classic Red River (1948) and alongside James Stewart in The Broken Arrow (1950). He also played a young sailor in the first scene of the classic film Endstation Sehnsucht , who was asked by Vivien Leigh for directions. In adulthood, he hardly received any offers, so he looked for other career opportunities.

In 1951, Kuhn decided to join the Navy. After four years of compulsory service, he returned to film and television in 1955. Kuhn got married during this time and has two children from this marriage. He attended LA Valley College and California State University to study theater and kept himself afloat with odd jobs. In the film business, however, he no longer found the desired success, so that he finally said goodbye to the acting business in the early 1960s. In 1965 he was hired at American Airlines , where he worked as a flight attendant supervisor. Later he was also employed in a managerial position at Boston Airport. After divorcing his first wife, he remarried in 1984 and left the aviation business in 1995. He then spent a lot of time offering historical tours around the city of Boston and participated in various film festivals. According to a 2017 article, he now lives in Naples , Florida , and volunteers at the hospital several hours a week.

Mickey Kuhn received the Golden Boot Award in 2005 for his life's work as a western actor. Since the death of Olivia de Havilland in 2020, Kuhn has been the last living actor from Gone With the Wind to be mentioned in the opening credits.
