Franz Müller-Heuser

Franz Müller-Heuser (born March 8, 1932 in Wesel ; † December 30, 2010 in Cologne ) was a German concert singer and music college professor.

Life

Müller-Heuser received his training as an opera and concert singer (baritone) at the Folkwang School in Essen . At the same time he studied musicology, art history and philosophy at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate on the "Aesthetics of Gregorian Singing ".

As a professional singer he gave numerous oratorio concerts and recitals in all major German cities and went on concert tours to other European and non-European countries. He made records, radio and television recordings and stood on the podium for a total of 35 years.

In 1963 he was appointed professor for singing at the Cologne University of Music . In 1976 he was appointed director of the university. After the passing of the new art college law, he was elected rector of the college in 1989 and remained in this position until his retirement in 1997.

In 1978 he became the founding president of the State Music Council of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1988 to 2003 Müller-Heuser was President of the German Music Council . In the 1990s, under his leadership, this umbrella association united with that of the former GDR, created new projects and reorganized its infrastructure in order to make itself more sustainable for growing areas of responsibility.

Since 1998, Müller-Heuser has been the founding president of the newly established Nuremberg-Augsburg University of Music . In 1999 he was elected chairman of the cultural council.

Franz Müller-Heuser was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and in 1993 the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

He died at the age of 78. There were two funeral services on January 8, 2011, after which he was buried in Cologne's Melaten cemetery (hallway 20 (E)). His temporary wife was Inge Müller-Heuser (1921-2010), who was a councilwoman in Wesel for many years, chairwoman of the culture committee and art patron.
