Johannes Henricus Zaaijer (born May 29, 1876 in Leiden ; † November 9, 1932 there ) was a Dutch physician.

Life

Johannes Henricus was the son of the Leiden medicine professor Teunis Zaaijer and his wife Johanna Petronella Jacoba Scholten. After attending the municipal high school in Leiden , he enrolled on September 26, 1894 at the University of Leiden to study medicine. Initially he had devoted himself to flora and fauna, but then turned to medical studies. After continuing his studies at the University of Heidelberg, among other places , he passed his medical examination in 1901 and then worked as an assistant in pathological anatomy in Leiden. In 1903 he received his doctorate in Leiden with the thesis Bijdrage tot de kennis van den oorsprong en den bouw der naevuscellen en der naevatumoren as a doctor of medicine. In the same year he moved to the University of Amsterdam as a medical assistant , was medical assistant at the University of Leiden in 1907 and completed his habilitation in 1908 as a private lecturer in surgery and urology in Leiden.

On October 14, 1914, he was appointed professor of medicine, which task he took on on March 3, 1915 with the introductory speech Moderne vredes- en oorlogschirurgie (German: Modern Peace and War Surgery ). Zaaijer made a name for himself in the further development of anesthesia. So he developed a device for so-called positive pressure anesthesia, which enabled him to operate on the chest cavity and esophagus. He also achieved success in the field of transplantation when he developed a method of operating blood vessels. Then he was still occupied with studies on carcinoma and appendix . On September 19, 1932, he was elected rector of the Alma Mater . However, he died unexpectedly during this period in office.

family

Zaaijer married on September 20, 1906 in Arnhem with Christine Albertine Louise van Oordt (born April 26, 1883 in Valkenburg; † October 12, 1961 in Bloemendaal), the daughter of the manufacturer and mayor of Valkenburg Willem Hendrik van Oordt (* 23. June 1849 in Rotterdam; † August 25, 1903 in Valkenburg) and his wife Christina Albertina Brunting (born August 17, 1853 in Batavia; † October 27, 1922 in Arnhem). The marriage has two sons and two daughters. From the children we know:

  • Christine Albertine Zaaijer (born February 4, 1912 in Leiden, † May 31, 2000) married. with the conservator Dr. Hendrik Wamsteker (born May 1, 1900 in Madioen, † July 12, 1959 in Haarlem)
  • Willem Hendrik Zaaijer (born April 13, 1909 in Leiden; † April 13, 1969 in Hardenberg) married. IK van Idsinga, married. II. February 6, 1937 in The Hague with Klari Mathé (born November 3, 1910 in Budapest; † November 6, 1993 in Oss), married. III. May 30, 1950 with Roselotte Ruth Baldow (born June 19, 1906 in Frankfurt / Main; † April 7, 1982 in Ommen)
