Teunis Zaaijer , also: Teunis Zaayer , (born November 15, 1837 in Dirksland , † December 23, 1902 in Leiden ) was a Dutch physician.

Life

Zaayer was the son of the mayor Pieter Zaayer (born May 31, 1813 in Dirksland, † February 2, 1896 ibid) and his wife Jannetje Lodder (born September 28, 1814 in Ouddorp, † March 22, 1900 ibid). He had attended the village school in his hometown, then the boarding school in Drimmelen and later in Geertruidenberg . After completing his training as a geodesist , he enrolled at the University of Leiden on October 1, 1856 to study medicine. On May 30, 1862 he received his doctorate with the subject Beschrijving van twee vrouwenbekkens uit the East Indian Archipelago (freely translated into German: Description of two women's pools from the East Indian Archipelago ) as a doctor of medicine. On September 10th he obtained a doctorate in gynecology (art. Obst.) And a doctorate in surgery on October 9th. Then he went to Berlin where he followed the lectures of Rudolf Virchow , Albrecht von Graefe , Bernhard von Langenbeck and Ludwig Traube .

In January 1863 he had to break off his studies because he was appointed to the second prosector of anatomy at the anatomical cabinet in Leiden, which task he took on on February 1 under Hidde Halbertsma Justuszoon . In the summer of 1864 he completed another educational trip. This led him to Vienna , where he met Josef Hyrtl and Ernst Wilhelm von Brücke . Via Prague he traveled to Leipzig to see Eduard Friedrich Weber , had met Hermann Welcker in Halle (Saale) and Jacob Henle in Göttingen . When he returned to his home country, he received offers from the University of Utrecht and the University of Groningen, which he turned down. On December 30, 1870, he became a full professor of anatomy and practical forensic medicine. On February 28, 1888, he was released from his professorship in forensic medicine, which he took over again on May 13, 1901. In 1881 he became a member of the local council in Leiden and curator of the grammar school in Leiden, of which he was later president. On May 4, 1874, the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in Amsterdam accepted him as a member and he became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion in August 1892 .
