Blagoje Adžić (born September 2, 1932 in Pridvorica , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † March 1, 2012 in Belgrade , Serbia ) was Chief of Staff of the Yugoslav Army at the beginning of the Yugoslav War .

Life

Adžić, born into a Serbian family in the south of Bosnia-Herzegovina , saw his relatives murdered by Croatian Ustašas as a child . After the Second World War he attended the officers' school of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and graduated in 1953. He also acquired a foreign language diploma and attended the "Frunze" military academy of the Soviet armed forces .

During his career in the JNA he held various commands, for example he was first battalion and later division commander. In 1986 he became deputy commander of the 7th Army, a year later he was promoted to lieutenant general. A little later he took over the post of deputy chief of staff at the headquarters of the Yugoslav armed forces and was promoted to colonel general. After the resignation of the Chief of Staff in September 1989, Adžić became the highest representative of the JNA and remained so until May 1992. In early 1992, after the resignation of Veljko Kadijević, he was briefly acting Defense Minister of Yugoslavia.

In the wake of the wars in Yugoslavia, the ICTY considered bringing charges against Adžić, but this ultimately failed to materialize. A Croatian lawsuit from Osijek had no consequences.
