initial situation
After the Yugoslav People's Army captured Vukovar , Osijek was the next target on the campaign in Croatia. The city was exposed to massive artillery fire.
During the battle, a large number of Croatian refugees from the surrounding areas were in Osijek.
The Croatian authorities tried thirteen JNA officers in absentia for war crimes against the civilian population. However, these eluded the Croatian judiciary abroad.
Consequences of the attacks on the city
By June 1992 around 800 people were killed and many wounded by the artillery bombardment .
