Ahmed Dini Ahmed (* 1932 ; † September 12, 2004 in Djibouti City ) ( Arabic : أحمد ديني أحمد ) was a politician in Djibouti .

Life

Ahmed Dini Ahmed was born near Mont Mabla in northern Djibouti and belonged to the Afar ethnic group . He went into politics at the age of 26. In 1959 he became vice-president of the government council of the then French territory of the Afar and Issa and thus held the highest office for locals. In the 1960s he held various positions for the government council.

In 1973 Ahmed Dini and Issa Hassan Gouled Aptidon founded the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l'Indépendance (LPAI), which advocated Djibouti's independence from France. This goal was achieved in 1977, after which Aptidon became president and Ahmed Dini Ahmed his prime minister.

In 1978 he left the government, accusing Aptidon of concentrating power on himself, and retired to Tadjoura . In 1981, Aptidon made its Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progrès (RPP) party the only legal unitary party.

In 1990 Ahmed Dini joined the opposition Afar group Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy (FRUD), which began a civil war against the government in 1991 ; In 1992 he became chairman of FRUD. While part of the FRUD made peace with the government at the end of 1994, the faction led by Ahmed Dini continued the armed struggle. After a peace agreement in 2001, Ahmed Dini finally returned to Djibouti after nine years of exile in Paris, where he founded the Union pour l'Alternance Démocratique party .

On September 12, 2004, at the age of 72, he died in Djibouti City .
