It is officially oriented towards social democracy.

history

The party was founded in 1979 by President Hassan Gouled Aptidon in Dikhil after he had dissolved the predecessor party LPAI . She mainly represented the Issa ethnic group . From 1981 it was the only legal unitary party until a new constitution with multi-party democracy was introduced in 1992. 1991–1994 the Afar rebel group FRUD led an armed struggle against the rule of the RPP, after which it largely cooperated with the government.

The RPP remained the dominant party after the re-establishment of a multi-party system. In the parliamentary elections in Djibouti in 2003 , the alliance Union pour la Majorité Présidentielle (Union for the Presidential Majority) led by the former rebel group FRUD and two smaller parties won 62.7% of the vote and thus all 65 seats in the National Assembly , during the opposition coalition Union pour l'Alternance Démocratique with 37.3% won no seat. In the presidential elections in 2005, the incumbent RPP President Ismail Omar Guelleh received almost 100% of the vote with a 71.7% turnout without an opponent. In the last parliamentary elections in 2008 , which were boycotted by the opposition, all seats again went to the UMP.
