Dikhil or Dichil ( Arabic دخيل Dichīl , DMG Diḫīl ) is a city in southern Djibouti and the capital of the Dikhil region . It has a population of around 17,000, including both members of the Issa majority ethnic group and the Afar minority.
The village was built in 1928 under the French colonial power to secure the southern border of the former colonial area of Djibouti (or French Somali coast ). The oasis with date palm plantations and wells had already served as a station for caravans from Awsa to Lake Assal and to Tadjoura .
In 1979, the first president of the independent Djibouti, Hassan Gouled Aptidon , founded the Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progrès party in Dikhil , which has dominated Djibouti politics ever since .
Dikhil is seen as an example of a peaceful coexistence between Issa and Afar, between which relations in Djibouti are tense. In addition to these indigenous ethnic groups, Ethiopian and Arab traders also live here, and trade with Ethiopia is an important economic factor. Dikhil is connected to Djibouti city by a paved road and serves as a base for tourists traveling to Lake Abbe .
It is twinned with Littlehampton, England .
