Leopold Eugen Měchura
Leopold Eugen Měchura (born February 2, 1804 in Prague , † February 11, 1870 in Otín near Klatovy ) was a Czech composer .
life and work
Měchura was a son of the Prague lawyer and landlord on Otín, Jan Měchura and his wife Marie, née Lankisch von Hörnitz. He studied law at Charles University in Prague, as well as piano and music theory. He then moved to Otín near Klatovy. As a municipal legal advisor in Klatovy, he maintained music as a private entertainment and also participated in many performances.
He composed a lot of vocal works, church music and operas with Czech and German texts. His most famous work, Marie Potocká, based on a poem by Pushkin, premiered in 1871, a year after Mĕchura's death, in the Prague National Theater under the direction of Bedřich Smetana .
He was a typical amateur musician of the Biedermeier period , but was celebrated as an important national composer after a concert of his works on March 22, 1868 in Prague.
Měchura was František Palacký's brother-in-law .
