Karl Bilek

Karl Bilek (born January 28, 1932 in Gastorf , Czechoslovakia ) is a German gynecologist. He taught at the University of Leipzig and was director of the women's clinic from 1974 to 1997.

Life

In 1951, Karl Bilek moved to the University of Leipzig to study medicine. This he graduated in 1956 with his promotion to the doctor from the medical field. The dissertation is entitled The potassium content of the mature, immature and pathological human placenta - enzyme-analytical and histochemical studies in blood and tissues . That year he became an assistant at the Institute for Pathology at the university. Bilek began his training as a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics at the Leipzig University Women's Clinic in 1958. He finished this in 1964 and was employed as a doctor at the women's clinic. In 1966, Bilek's habilitation for gynecology and obstetrics took place in Leipzig based on the text The behavior of carbonic anhydrase in obstetrics and gynecology . In that year he was promoted to senior physician at the clinic and appointed as a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine the following year . The university finally appointed him full professor in 1974. At the same time, he took over the management of the university women's clinic, but gave up the position of senior physician.

In 1979 Leipzig awarded Bilek the prize named after Margarete Blank . In 1984 he organized a symposium in honor of Robert Schröder at the university . Five years later he and others organized the 11th Gynecologist Congress in the GDR. In that year, 1989, he was also honored as the Honored Doctor of the People . In 1992, following his commitment, a symposium in honor of Carl Siegmund Franz Credé was held at the women's clinic . From 1950 to 1990 Bilek was a member of the SED . Since 1960 he belonged to the Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics of the GDR , in 1990 he became a member of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics .

Since the 1960s, Bilek dealt with cancer therapy , he also dealt with the systematic promotion of perinatology , reproductive medicine and senology . During his time as director of the clinic, he dealt with the question of how to recognize a malformation of a fetus and the miscarriage at an early stage . As a result, the clinic has become a hub for in vitro fertilization . Bilek also worked on the journals Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie und Heilberufe .
