Carl Siegmund Franz Credé
Carl Siegmund Franz Credé (born December 23, 1819 in Berlin , † March 14, 1892 in Leipzig ) was a German gynecologist and obstetrician . From 1856 to 1887, Credé headed the Leipzig University Women's Clinic . It went down in medical history through the introduction of Credé prophylaxis in newborns. Life
Credé studied medicine in Berlin and Heidelberg from 1838, received his doctorate in Berlin in 1842 and completed his habilitation in 1850. In 1852 he took over the position of director of the Berlin midwifery school and the gynecological department of the Berlin Charité . In 1856 he moved to Leipzig, where he was appointed professor of obstetrics. He was one of the first doctors to introduce the disinfection of hands by means of chlorinated lime, as propagated by Ignaz Semmelweis , to protect against puerperal fever . He also promoted gynecological surgical methods and set up a gynecological clinic at the medical faculty of the University of Leipzig . Under his leadership, this clinic acquired the reputation of one of the most modern teaching institutes for obstetrics and gynecology in Germany.
In addition to his theoretical and practical work as a doctor and professor, Credé was editor-in-chief of the monthly for obstetrics and gynecology from 1853 and of the archive for gynecology, which appeared from 1870 . He was also one of the initiators of the German Society for Gynecology, founded in 1885 .
