Hinrich Lehmann-Grube (born December 21, 1932 in Königsberg ; † August 6, 2017 in Leipzig ) was a German local politician ( SPD ). From 1979 to 1990 he was senior city director of Hanover, then until 1998 mayor of the city of Leipzig.

Life

Lehmann-Grube was born in 1932 as the son of the pediatrician Fritz Lehmann-Grube and his wife Elsa nee. Luck born. In 1951 he finished his school years with the Abitur in Hamburg and then studied law, interrupted by a six-month study visit at the Sorbonne in Paris. He passed both state exams and received his doctorate in 1961.

In 1956 Lehmann-Grube became a member of the SPD. In 1957 he married Ursula Paproth. The couple had four children.

From 1957 to 1967 Lehmann-Grube worked in the main office of the German Association of Cities in Cologne . From 1967 to 1979 he was an alderman in the city administration of Cologne. In 1979 he became City Director of the City of Hanover , which has been a partner city of Leipzig since November 23, 1987.

In order to be able to participate as an SPD candidate in the GDR municipal elections on May 6, 1990 in Leipzig, Lehmann-Grube took on GDR citizenship in April 1990. He won his constituency and became a city councilor in Leipzig. On June 6, 1990, the city council elected him mayor. His term of office was shaped by the “Leipzig Model”, the alternative political attempt to solve problems across party and faction boundaries in a factual manner. In the direct elections for the mayor on June 26, 1994, he was confirmed in office with a large majority.

During Lehmann-Grube's tenure, the new exhibition grounds were inaugurated in 1996 and the communities of Hartmannsdorf , Lausen , Plaußig and Seehausen were incorporated into Leipzig. On June 30, 1998, Lehmann-Grube retired and on July 1, 1998 handed over the business to his party colleague and previous deputy Wolfgang Tiefensee , who had been elected as his successor.

Lehmann-Grube died in August 2017 at the age of 84 in St. Elisabeth Hospital in Connewitz of complications from cancer. The burial took place on August 14, 2017 at the Südfriedhof in Leipzig.

On July 14, 1999, Lehmann-Grube was made an honorary citizen of the city ​​of Leipzig in recognition of his services as Lord Mayor 1990–1998 .
