After returning to the GDR, he moved to the Federal Republic of Germany .

In November 1955 he resumed his chemistry studies at the Phillips University of Marburg, which he then completed in 1962 with a doctorate. In 1967 he completed his habilitation under Karl Dimroth in the field of organic chemistry. In 1970 he was appointed professor at the University of Marburg. In 1998 he was retired for reasons of age.

Aurich still lives in Marburg after his retirement and has written an autobiographical book. During his teaching activity he was co-author of an internship book.
