List of Silly Symphonies films

Producer Walt Disney in 1938

The list of Silly Symphonies films includes 75 short cartoons released by Walt Disney Productions between 1929 and 1939 . The “ Silly Symphonies ” series was created based on an idea by composer Carl Stalling , who was able to convince Walt Disney to start a second series of animated films in addition to the Mickey Mouse films, in which instead of recurring characters, the visual implementation of music should be the focus.

As the first film in the series, the short film Dance of the Skeletons was released on August 22, 1929 . However, the series did not become successful until 1932, when the film Von Blumen und Trees (original Flowers and Trees ) presented a new Technicolor process that guaranteed natural colors for the first time. Disney owned the exclusive rights to this color film system for one year . The Silly Symphonies developed into the most prestigious series at Disney, which celebrated its greatest international success in 1933 with The Three Little Pigs (orig. Three Little Pigs ).

Walt Disney made technical innovations in the Silly Symphonies try, the realistic animation of human characters in The Rape of the spring goddess (orig. The Goddess of Spring ) or the first use of a newly developed multiplane camera in The Old Mill (orig. The Old Mill ). The experiences in the production of these short films flowed into the development of Disney's first full-length cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (orig. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves ).

The Silly Symphonies series was discontinued in 1938 due to the high production costs and the realignment of Walt Disney Productions towards the creation of full-length cartoons. The last film in the series, The Ugly Duckling (orig. The Ugly Duckling ), was released at Easter 1939 and was awarded the Oscar for best animated short film a year later . Since the introduction of this category at the 1932 Academy Awards , until 1940, every Academy Award went to a Disney film; With the exception of the film Ferdinand, the bull , which was produced outside of the series, only Silly Symphonies cartoons were awarded.
