Rodolfo Stavenhagen

Rodolfo Stavenhagen (born August 29, 1932 in Frankfurt ; † November 5, 2016 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican sociologist and the first UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples .

He was born in Frankfurt to a Jewish family who soon fled Nazi persecution, the stages of the flight included Italy , Switzerland , the Netherlands and the USA before finally reaching Mexico in 1940 .

In 1951 Stavenhagen made his bachelor's degree at the University of Chicago , 1958 his master's degree in social anthropology from the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico . In 1965 he obtained a doctorate in sociology in Paris. From that year on, he was professor at the Centro de Estudios Sociológicos (CES) of El Colegio de México . In 2001 he was appointed by the UN Commission on Human Rights through Resolution 2001/57 as the first UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous peoples. His mandate ended on April 30, 2008. He was succeeded by S. James Anaya of the University of Arizona
