history

It was founded in 1940 by the Mexican government under President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río as a state follow-up institution to the " Casa de España " (German: Spain House ). Co-founders were the Banco de México , the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Fondo de Cultura Económica (German: Fund of Favorable Culture ). The “Casa de España” was founded in 1938 to be able to support intellectual Spaniards who had emigrated to Mexico on the run from the Spanish civil war .

The first director of COLMEX until 1958 was the Mexican poet and essayist Alfonso Reyes , who had previously also directed the "Casa de España". During this time the Research Institutes for History (1941), Social Sciences (1943) and Linguistics and Literature Studies (1947) were established. In 1958 Daniel Cosío Villegas succeeded Reyes as university director and passed this position on again just a year later. In 1960 COLMEX was expanded to include the Research Institute for International Studies and in 1964 under Silvio Zavala , who headed COLMEX from 1963 to 1966, the Institute for Research into Economics and Population Sciences was expanded.

Entrance area

In 1976 COLMEX moved into the current building complex in the south of Mexico City, designed by Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky . Today COLMEX, which has been autonomous since 1998, has seven research institutes and one of the most important libraries in Latin America .
