Josef Steiner (born July 22, 1932 in Steinen , Canton Schwyz , † February 5, 2003 in Arosa ) was a Swiss grandmaster in correspondence chess .

In 1960 Steiner won the correspondence chess championship in Switzerland. In 1973 he became correspondence chess grandmaster because of his success in the invitation tournament "25 Years of the BdF" (4th place with 9.5 out of 14 points). He was the first correspondence chess grandmaster in Switzerland. This made him known in Switzerland. In 1973/74 he played a radio game against the listeners of Radio Beromünster, which ended in a draw. Steiner still took part in the correspondence chess tournament "Potter Memorial" (1975-1978) and then ended his correspondence chess career.

Private

In 1956 Steiner married and the marriage had 7 children. He ran a cutlery and household goods business in Wohlen as a self-employed person . He was also president of the Wohlen chess club for a long time. To compensate for this, Steiner did not only chess, but also cycling, skiing, Jassen and backgammon.

He has had health problems since an accident in 1991. He died of heart failure in 2003.
