Ali Rizâ Pasha

Ali Rıza Pascha (* 1860 in Istanbul ; † November 6, 1932 there ) was an officer, politician and Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire . He was the son of the retired Gendarmerie Major Tahir Efendi.

In 1886 Ali Rıza graduated from military school with the rank of chief of staff. A year later he went to Germany for further training . In the meantime he rose to major. In 1890 he returned to İstanbul and was promoted to lieutenant colonel. During the Turkish-Greek War he headed the Office of Warfare. In 1898 he rose to brigadier general and was director of the general staff. In 1901 he was in charge of the fifth company in Skopje as lieutenant general , and in 1903 he became the Vali of Bitola and also commander of the army in Bitola. In 1903 he was accused of the murder of the Russian consul and was exiled to Tripoli at the urging of Russia . In 1905 Ali Rıza was tasked with suppressing an uprising in Yemen.

After the proclamation of the Second Constitutional Monarchy, he became Marshal of the Second Ottoman Army. On August 14, 1908, he became Minister of Defense. At the appeal of the Committee for Unity and Progress , he was removed from the government by Grand Vizier Kamil Pasha as Chief Commissioner in Egypt . Under Hüseyin Hilmi Pascha he became defense minister again, but resigned because of the events of March 31.

He became active again during the Balkan War and the War with Montenegro . After the wars he became a member of the Senate. After the First World War he held various posts such as the Minister of the Navy, the inspector and finally that of the civil servant in Parliament. Ali Rıza Pasha was under Sultan Mehmet Vahdettin and the occupation of Istanbul for 5 months and 7 days Grand Vizier. Because of the unfortunate events during his tenure, he was nicknamed Düztaban (dt .: ominous).
