Edhem Pasha

İbrahim Edhem Pascha (* 1818 in Chios , Ottoman Empire , today Greece ; † 1893 ) or İbrahim Ethem Pascha was the Grand Vizier of multiple ministers of the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Abdülhamid II from February 5, 1877 to January 13, 1878 .

Life and origin

It is assumed that Edhem was of Greek or at least Christian origin and came into the care of Koca Mehmet Hüsrev Pasha either as a slave or through adoption . His descent from a Greek - Orthodox village on Chios is not well documented. The son Osman Hamdi Bey stated that Ibrahim Edhem was descended from the Skaramanga family, but the latter tried to deny his connections to Greece . His high intelligence brought him the attention of Sultan Mahmut II , who sent him to Paris for training. There he became the first modern Turkish mineral engineer.

He was the father of Osman Hamdi Bey, İsmail Galip Bey and Halil Edhem Eldem .

According to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Turkey , Edhem was a Freemason . From 1865 he was an honorary member of the Greek Philological Society in Constantinople .
