Bobby Sisco (born August 24, 1932 in Bolivar , Tennessee , as Robert W. Sisco ; † July 17, 2005 in Munster , Indiana ) was an American rockabilly and country musician.

Life

Childhood and youth

Bobby Sisco grew up in Bolivar, Tennessee, where he graduated from high school with friend Ramsey Kearney . Kearney would later become a singer himself. Sisco had two sisters and every Saturday night heard the family over the radio, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville . His mother taught him to play the guitar .

Career

In 1948 he had two sponsored radio shows through WTJS in Jackson , Tennessee, and appeared in Jackson's rough honky tonks from 1949. In the following period he often played with Carl Perkins and his brothers. This was followed by appearances at WDXI, but after Sisco's father gave up his parents' farm, the family moved to Calumet , Michigan , where he performed in clubs in the evenings.

Sisco was brought to Harry Glenn, owner of Mar-Vel Records , who signed him through Uncle John Ellis, a DJ for radio station WJOB in Hammond , Indiana . With the financial support of Bill McCall, director of 4 Star Records , a session was arranged at Universal Studios in Chicago , which produced the single Honky Tonkin 'Rhythm / Wrong or Right . Released in early 1956, the record was particularly successful in the Midwest and gave Sisco the opportunity to perform with stars such as Johnny Cash , George Jones and Little Jimmy Dickens .

In 1957 Sisco auditioned for Chess Records and owner Leonard Chess offered him a contract. After Sisco wrote Go, Go, Go a session was held in Chicago, where Sisco recorded Go, Go, Go / Tall Dark & Handsome Man with his guitarist Johnny Hammers and a studio band . The B-side was mistaken for Chuck Berry's Brown Eyed Handsome Man by some people, and Sisco, who thought Chess passed his song on to Chuck Berry, left Chess in an argument. Despite this, the single was released, but achieved little success and Sisco's contract was terminated.

In the years that followed, Sisco worked again with Harry Glenn and played a few country singles for his Glenn Records . One of these songs, Are You the Type , was also released as a studio band on Vee Jay Records with Floyd Cramer , Grady Martin and Buddy Harman . Nevertheless, success did not come for Sisco. In the 1960s he played singles for Brave Records and in the 1970s he ran his own Wesco label, which also released his own records.

Bobby Sisco died in Munster, Indiana in 2005.
